Ruth Shipwash Cable

Ruth Jeanette Shipwash Cable, of High Point, formerly of the Allen Jay area, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Hospice Home at High Point.

Born Dec. 9, 1921, in Guilford County, she was a daughter of Guthrie Oakley and Ethel Jane Smith Shipwash. She was a member of English Road Baptist Church and had attended Hope Baptist Church on Old Edgar Road. She was retired from Claude Gable Furniture. On Dec. 21, 1951, she was married to Walsie Merrill Cable, who preceded her in death Feb. 13, 1997. Also preceding her in death were her parents; sister, Beulah Mae Shipwash; twin sister, Ruby Burchfield; and brother, Hal Shipwash.

Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Vaughn and husband Stephen of High Point; two granddaughters, Jan Bush and husband Jason, and Jane Vaughn; and two great-grandchildren, Charles Rich and Nikki Bush.

A funeral was held Thursday, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, officiated by the Rev. Steve McSwain. Interment followed in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.

Brenda Crotts

Brenda Hardister Crotts, 62, of High Point, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at her home.

She was born April 29, 1947, in Randolph County, a daughter of Elsie "Doc" Hardister and Beulah Tysinger Hardister. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garry W. Crotts, and brother, Earl Hardister. She was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. She retired from Drexel Heritage Furniture after more than 20 years of service. She loved spending time with her daughter and grandsons and watching her grandsons' ball games.

Survivors include a daughter, Shanda Vickers and husband Kevin of Trinity; sister, Evelyn Shaw of New Hope; three brothers, Elsie Hardister and wife Colleen of New Hope, Wayne Hardister and wife Carolyn of Greensboro and Rick Hardister and wife Mary of New Hope; and two grandsons, Seth Vickers and Ian Vickers.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Aug. 19, in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, with Pastor Steve Jarvis officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church cemetery.

Doris Sapp Davis

Doris Sapp Davis, 85, of 2007 Edgewood Drive, formerly of Avalon Place, High Point, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, after six months of declining health at Westchester Manor Nursing Center.

She was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Davidson County, to Paul E. Sapp and Hattie K. Sapp. On Feb. 13, 1948, she married James Melvin Davis of Kings Mountain, who died July 25, 1995, after 47 years of marriage. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Sapp of Asheboro and Paul E. Sapp Jr. of High Point.

She worked in the furniture industry at Heritage Furniture and later retired from Woodmark Originals as an outside upholsterer. After retirement she worked as a sitter, taking care of patients at High Point Regional Hospital. She loved to play the piano for her church and for a gospel group at the Roy B. Culler Senior Center. She also won several awards for her acrylic painting and was featured twice in the High Point Enterprise.

She is survived by a daughter, Janice McNeil Williams and her husband Randy of the home; a son, James Tracy Davis and fiancée Patty Stiller of Salisbury; grandsons, Aaron McNeil and Casey Stiller; granddaughter, Carly Stiller; stepgranddaughter, Melissa Lewis; and sister, Margaret Johnson of Trinity.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 22, in Burton Street Missionary Methodist Church, with Pastor Jeff Burton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point assisted the family.

James Griffin

James "Jimmy" William Griffin, 85, of Stratford Place, High Point, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Durham, a son of Berry S. and Lillian King Griffin. He was associated with Neil Pontiac, Lyles Chevrolet and Crescent Ford as parts and service manager. He retired from the Guilford County School System after 14 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marines. He was a member of Covenant Church United Methodist. He liked trains, yard work, watching movies and television, and telling jokes. He also was a member of the 80' Club which he enjoyed very much. On Feb. 2, 1946, he was married to Margaret Tuttle, who died March 9, 1996. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kenneth James Hucks.

He is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Hucks of High Point; grandsons, Brandon Hucks of Hickory and Ryan Hucks and wife Heather of Trinity; and three great-grandsons, William and Andrew Hucks of Hickory and Conner Nelson of Trinity.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Covenant Church United Methodist, officiated by the Rev. Karen Miller. Inurnment will be at a later date in Guilford Memorial Park Cemetery. Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point assisted the family.

Ora Leonard

Ora Sexton Leonard, 90, formerly of Elm Towers in High Point, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at the GrayBrier Nursing and Retirement Center.

She was born May 11, 1919, in Carroll County, Va., a daughter of William F. and Kate Holloway Sexton. She had been a resident of High Point most of her life and was a retired employee of Silver Knit Hosiery. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and was married to Roy Daniel Leonard Sr., who preceded her in death in l953.

Surviving are two daughters, Loma VanHoy and husband Joe of 515 Playground Road, Archdale and Billie Witcher and husband Donald of 604 Abbie Ave., High Point; a son, Roy Leonard Jr. of Walkertown; a sister, Margaret Presnell of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Aug. 22, at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, by the Rev. Taylor Humphries. Interment followed in Floral Garden Memorial Park cemetery.

Steve Portis

Steve Portis, 52, of Denton, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, following a motorcycle accident.

He was born Feb. 23, 1957, in High Point, a son of Lawrence Allen Portis and Lena Matthews Portis. He was an Army veteran and owned and operated Nature's Image Taxidermy in Denton. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allen Portis.

Surviving are a son, Steve Portis, Jr. and wife Nadine of Winston Salem; three daughters, Sherri Muse and husband Steve of Thomasville, Katie Portis of Central, S.C. and Sarah Portis of Denton; two sisters, Dianne Wilson and husband Lee of Wilmington and Linda Cunningham and husband Virgil of Archdale; two brothers, Larry Portis and wife Janie of Thomasville and Leroy Portis and wife Marie of Darian, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Madison Muse and T.J. Norman.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Davis Funerals and Cremations chapel, by Pastor Keith Carroll. Burial followed in Floral Garden Memorial Park cemetery.

Charles August Riehs

SFC Charles August Riehs, 85, of Archdale, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro.

Born May 9, 1924,in Columbus Texas, he was a son of the late Charles Fritz Riehs and Ophelia Saxon Riehs. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He also served active duty in the Korean Conflict and retired in 1960 after 21 years of service. He was a member of VFW Post 9899 in Archdale. He was the owner and operator of Antiques and Things along with his wife of more than 50 years, Doris Riehs. She preceded him in death in 2002. He was a member of High Point Friends Meeting, a past Counselor for the State of North Carolina in the Jr. O.U.A.M. and a member of the board of directors of the American Children's Home in Lexington.

He is survived by four children, Karl Fritz Riehs and wife Dianne of Dothan, Ala., Karen Riehs Waters and husband Ronnie of Kannapolis, Charles W. Riehs of Trinity and Kevin Clark Riehs of Thomasville; a brother, Clifford Riehs and wife Kay of Sacramento, Calif.; sister-in-law, Joyce Riehs of Victoria, Texas; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Aug. 23, at High Point Friends Meeting, with ministers Kelly Kellum and Ron Selleck officiating. Interment followed in Springfield Friends Meeting Cemetery. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale assisted the family.

Bill Smith

William Brantley "Bill" Smith, 83, of Sophia, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at High Point Regional Hospital.

He was a native of Nelsonville, Ohio and a retired produce salesman. He was a member of Flint Hill United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emery Ervin and Lillian Skiver Smith; sister, Louvenia S. Yow; and brothers, Cable Bowers and Gerald Smith.

He is survived by sons, David Smith and wife Glenda of Sophia, Jeffrey Smith and wife Pat of Sophia, Blaine Smith of the home and Mike and wife Beckey Adams of Clemmons; grandchildren, Michelle Bass and husband Chris of Rocky Mount, Julie Smith of Sophia and Amy Lou Smith of Sophia; great-grandchildren, Camryn Bass of Rocky Mount and Gracie Bass of Rocky Mount; sister, Violet Horton of Sophia; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Flint Hill United Church Of Christ in Sophia, with the Rev. Jack Clark officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pugh Funeral Home of Randleman assisted the family.

Rev. Wayne Taylor

The Rev. John Wayne Taylor, 67, of 3590 Wood Village Drive, Trinity, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 1, 1941, in Fruitland, Md., a son to Stingle Henry and Maggie Hopkins Taylor. He had been a resident of Trinity for the past 25 years. He pastored churches in North Carolina and Maryland and had served as pastor of West Fairfield Baptist Church in High Point for the past 10 years. He was also active with the Taylor Family Gospel Singers, traveling across the United States and Canada. He was an active youth sports coach in Fruitland, Md. as well as in North Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Taylor and Clyde Taylor; and two sisters, Patricia Pusey and Margaret Ruark.

On Dec. 2, 1989, he was married to Sandra Oldham, who survives of the residence. Also surviving are three daughters, Pamela Miller and husband James of Bethel, Del., Lisa Davis and husband, Chris of Salisbury, Md. and Michelle Baker and husband Jason of Archdale; a son, Chris Macon and wife Jennifer of Tarrytown, Ga.; six grandchildren, Matthew Davis, Andrew Davis, Anna Davis, Austin Miller, Cameron Baker and Preston Baker; and a brother, Oran Taylor and wife Evelyn of Salisbury, Md.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 25, at West Fairfield Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenny Greenway and the Rev. Danny Thompson officiating. Entombment followed in Floral Garden Memorial Park mausoleum. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, at Lighthouse Wesleyan Church, 620 W. Main St., Fruitland, Md. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale assisted the family. Pallbearers were deacons of his church, Eddie Webb, Mark Altman, Mark Mosley, Elbert Campbell and ministers, ordained by Pastor Taylor, Dan Parr and Tommy Sizemore.
